Table full of healthy food options

Cavities are often considered to be the most prevalent oral health issue, but gum disease is another that’s up there! Nearly half of adults over 30 in the U.S. have some form of it. That said, while it may be more widespread than you think, there are easy ways you can prevent it. You can follow proper dental hygiene, but eating the right foods can be helpful as well! Here are vitamins that keep the soft tissues in your mouth strong.

1.) Probiotics

Technically, probiotics aren’t a nutrient, but they have great benefits you shouldn’t ignore. They are bacteria, but they are good to have. They will balance out the bad ones in your mouth and lower your risk of problems like decay or an infection. That way, the harmful kind can’t build up as fast. Try adding fermented items like kombucha, yogurt, or kimchi to your diet.

2.) Zinc

Zinc is already an essential mineral for your well-being, but getting adequate levels can be helpful for your gum health. It can act as immune support and boost the response time to infection. Better yet, it can also have anti-inflammatory effects, so you can protect your body and mouth. Dairy products, nuts, and seafood are a few options that have this.

3.) Omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acids have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Combining it with the points above gives you a great shot at stopping plaque from causing trouble. Consider making meals with fatty fish, like mackerel, salmon, or tuna, to get plenty of this nutrient.

4.) Vitamin C

Vitamin C is crucial for collagen production, which is a structural protein that can keep your gums strong. If you don’t have enough of it, then the soft tissues in your mouth might feel more tender, bleed, or be inflamed. This puts them at a higher risk of infection, so eating oranges, strawberries, and broccoli (to name a few) can help you avoid trouble!

5.) Vitamin D

If you want to keep your immune system strong, then vitamin D is a great thing to get plenty of. It can improve your oral and overall health by fighting bacteria a bit more easily compared to those who are deficient. Your skin can actually make this one, so soak up the sun for at least 20 minutes daily. Just avoid peak hours and bring water for your safety! Egg yolk, fortified cheese, and mushrooms are a few items rich in it as well.

By adjusting your diet to include the items above, you can make sure your gums stay in great shape. Keep up with visits to your dentist and proper dental hygiene, and you can do your best to prevent an infection. That way, your smile stays problem- and worry-free.
